fresh blacktop
In 1985 there was a dedication to Joe Sambrook. They organized to have it outside, in back of the James Building before they built the extension. To prepare for the big day workers laid a fresh coat of blacktop and the custodians placed white chairs to accommodate the crowd. When the ceremony was finished we folded the chairs up and noticed hundreds of holes imprinted in the blacktop. Apparently, the fresh blacktop was a bit too fresh and had not managed to dry before the chairs were arranged so the workers had to re-pave the area the following day.

The Sambrook wing of James Lab was finished and as is the custom, there was a building dedication with Joe Sambrook, Lab staff, architects and builders in attendance. The dedication was held in the upper parking lot on a very hot day with all in attendance sitting on chairs that were brought from Bush Auditorium. Unfortunately, the combination of hot weather and chairs with thin legs caused the chairs to sink into the asphalt making many of the chairs too unstable to sit in.
