Davenport Laboratory circa 1960
This photo, taken around 1960 with my family's B&W Polaroid camera, is of the Davenport Laboratory (now part of Delbrück), before the bridge was built to the second floor from Bungtown Rd. The canoe on the lawn may have been ours. It spent some winters in the Davenport basement. My father, Alan W. Bernheimer, had a summer lab on the first floor in the near corner. At the far end overlooking the harbor, the "kitchen" ran across the width of the building, where glassware was washed and sterilized and media prepared for the courses (bacterial genetics, phage, and tissue culture) given upstairs. Working in the kitchen was my first job, about 1966, and I was paid two dollars an hour. |
