Carnegie Library
 

I work in the Carnegie Library as an archivist and cataloger. This is a wonderful old building. If you look at the brickwork in front of the building you can see an arch. I have been told that when the building was a laboratory there was a tunnel under the road to a below ground area for mycology.

The building is wonderfully made. For example, the newel posts on the stairs have a curve just below their crowns where I can put my weight as I turn the corner. It just fits the hand, and though the posts have been installed for a hundred years, there is no give in them.

I work in the Carnegie Building with Charles and I appreciate its traditional qualities, as well. I like hearing or reading about what people like about the building (and other buildings on the campus) as everyone seems to find something unique that stands out to them. When visitors come into the Library during a meeting or course break they will often comment on how they find it unusual to still find such an attractive old classic library. It's not something they come across at other laboratories. I usually respond that here at CSHL maintaining the old feel and style of the buildings is part of the plan-- there is a real sense of history throughout the campus.
