Default Blackout?

So there was a meeting scheduled for that evening and we thought, ok the electricians must have tripped the light. They were working in the building that day and we were sitting in the office in the dark and it was getting hotter because there was no air conditioning. I remembered that we had brought over from the Banbury center a few weeks prior an old transistor radio and we were joking around saying, oh look at my fancy transistor radio. But when we needed it we threw a couple of batteries in and we actually picked up some station and we realized that the whole eastern seaboard was out.
