| Courses: Instructors & Attendees Dr. Bashford Dean led the first course at Cold Spring Harbor in 1890, but the modern era began in 1945 with the Phage course, established by Max Delbrück and Salvador Luria. 1951 Phage Course Graduation
The graduation exercises, which were customary at 'P.U.' (the very unofficial Phage University), at the end of the 1951 Phage Course, were a real riot... There was a customary party, including an Eve with not much more than a live Texas boa snake, and even a cancan show.
