Wawepex Building since the 70s
The Grants Office moved into the middle level of Wawepex sometime during 1991/92. Prior to our arrival, the middle floor and top floor were used as visitor housing. The middle floor had four bedrooms and a shared two stall/two shower bathroom for women while the upstairs had three bedrooms, a very large one taking up one side of the building and the other two, similar in size to the downstairs rooms. This floor was for men who also shared a bathroom having two showers, one stall and one urinal.
We were given the middle level for our use and were faced with turning bedrooms into office space. With the help of the Building & Grounds staff (now called Facilities Department), we turned the four bedrooms, rabbit warren of rooms into an enlarged file room/workroom/kitchen on one side with a smaller single office and an open airy four-desk room at the other side of the building. The top floor was still being used for male visitor housing! As the lab grew and additional office space was needed, the large double sized bedroom was used as a Development office. At the same time, the other two bedrooms were reconfigured as a one-person office and a two-person office for use by the Grants Department. Once the Development office moved out, the double sized bedroom was split into two offices, one for the Cancer Center Administrator and the other a two person office housing the educational component of the Grants Office(meetings/courses/Watson School etc). The showers are still in place and we currently use them for storage as we continue to outgrow the space. Glad there isn't sufficient room in the shower to put a desk!!
